Thailand's Stat of Emergency extension to be proposed

Thailand’s committee on lockdown easing is planning to propose that the state of emergency be extended by another month to the end of August. The committee is citing increased uncertainty of the pandemic Covid-19.

National Security Council secretary-general Gen Somsak Rungsita, chairman of the committee, will make the recommendation to the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration at its meeting on Wednesday, July 23, 2020.

If approved, the extension of the Covid-19 state of emergency will be the fourth since it was first declared on April 3, for a total period of five months.

During an emergency, the prime minister may:

  • Prohibit anyone from leaving home
  • Prohibit gatherings at any place, any time
  • Prohibit the reporting, selling, distributing or disseminating of any media that have content that may frighten people or cause unrest
  • Prohibit the use of certain transport routes or vehicles
  • Shutdown buildings or establishments

The state of emergency decree also gives civil, criminal and disciplinary impunity to officials so long as they have acted reasonably.
