Demonstration Alert – U.S. Embassy Bangkok, Thailand (October 17-18, 2020)

Location: Bangkok Thailand.

Mass transit operators, Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) and Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT), may experience disruption of service due to the situation.

On October 15, 2020 Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha declared a State of Emergency for Bangkok.  In this declaration, groups of five or more people are prohibited from gathering.  This declaration has been approved by the Cabinet and is valid through November 13, 2020.

Although no violence is expected, even peaceful demonstrations can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations. 

U.S. citizens should monitor local news and social media reports before traveling to downtown Bangkok.

  • Monitor local media and our Embassy website for updates, and check your email for further alerts;
  • Avoid crowds;
  • Avoid demonstrations;
  • Be aware of your surroundings;
  • Review your personal security plans;
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities.
