Cambodia restores train link to Thailand after 45 years

Posted By Paul Xumsai on July 05, 2018 in World News

On July 4, 2020, Cambodia re-opened the final link of the railway that runs from Phnom Penh to the Thailand. The railway has not been operational for 45 years due to missing links in the tracks. Asian Development Bank provided US$13 million in 2009 so that the tracks can be restored.

By completing the remaining section, this should reduce travel time between the two neighboring counties and boost trades.

Cambodian transport minister Sun Chanthol said a train ran Wednesday morning from the northwestern province of Pursat to Phnom Penh, the last remaining section of the track between the two countries to be finished.

Cambodia and Thailand still have to hammer out an agreement on trains crossing the border but both countries are optimistic that deal will get done.
