March 9, 2021 – Today, Chiang Mai received the dubious honor of becoming the most polluted city on earth.

This announcing was made by the air monitoring website of IQAir. IQAir is the world's largest free real-time air quality information platform. According to IQAir, 7 million people die from air pollution every year, and billions suffer unnecessarily from the effects of poor air quality.

IQAir reports that over 30,000 people have gone to the hospital because of respiratory illnesses over the last three months.

Over the years, Chiang Mai’s air quality has been ranked as one of the worst cities for pollution. At noon, the level of PM2.5 recorded at Chang Puek road in Muang district rose to almost 200 µg/m3.

The main contributor for the pollution in the Northern region is said to be the considerable heat from wildfires caused by farmer’s open burning in Thailand and Myanmar.

The hazy skyline and poor air quality can be seen and felt all the way to Bangkok. Experts have advised that people stay indoors if at all possibly.

Thailand’s Meteorological Department warns that the air pollution would last another week.
