Thailand orders entertainment venues to close due to latest Covid-19 breakout

Thailand – Beginning today all entertainment venues have been ordered to shut down for the next two weeks.  The mandate effects 41 provinces, including Bangkok. The latest closure comes as new Covid-19 cases spawned by the Thonglor cluster, is rapidly spreading across the nation.

Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration spokesman Taweesilp Visanuyothin made the announcement during a press conference on Thursday. While Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha signed the order today.

The closure affects all bars, pubs, clubs, and karaoke establishments in the following provinces:

  2. Bangkok
  3. Buri Ram
  4. Chachoengsao
  5. Chaiyaphum
  6. Chanthaburi
  7. Chiang Mai
  8. Chiang Rai
  9. Chon Buri
  10. Chumphon
  11. Kanchanaburi
  12. Khon Kaen
  13. Lampang
  14. Loei
  15. Lop Buri
  16. Nakhon Nayok
  17. Nonthaburi
  18. Nakhon Pathom
  19. Nakhon Ratchasima
  20. Nakhon Si Thammarat
  21. Narathiwat
  22. Pathum Thani
  23. Phetchabun
  24. Phetchaburi
  25. Phuket
  26. Prachin Buri
  27. Prachuap Khiri Khan
  28. Ratchaburi
  29. Ranong
  30. Rayong
  31. Sa Kaeo
  32. Samut Prakan

Thailand health and security officials agreed that a total lockdown was not necessary and a targeted approach was the best option. The major concern was the potential spread of the UK variant of the virus, with cases detected in Thailand for the first time.

The news comes ahead of the long Songkran holiday next week, when millions of people will hit the roads for long vacations.
