Amazon cancels plan to HQ2 to New York City, leaving $3 billion on the table

Leaving a $3 billion incentive package on the table, Amazon has decided against coming to New York City.  The cancellation is a devastating blow to Govenor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio and costing the region up to 25,000 high-paying jobs.

The company said that it won’t build a new campus in Queens. The decision follows reports last week that Amazon was reconsidering its selection of New York, amid fierce political opposition. Much of the blowback sprung from the $3 billion state and city incentive offered the company to come to the city.

The city and state came up with $3 billion in subsidies for one of the world’s richest companies. While 70 percent of New Yorkers support the plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose the deal, including state Senator Michael Gianaris, the deputy majority leader.

Gov. Cuomo last week ripped Gianaris for his opposition.

Amazon thanked Govenor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio for their help and support. The negativity surrounding the deal was not something that the company wanted to deal with. And the company said it would abandon the search for a site for its new campus, dubbed HQ2.

In a statement, “we do not intend to re-open the HQ2 search at this time. We will proceed as planned in Northern Virginia and Nashville, and we will continue to hire and grow across our 17 corporate offices and tech hubs in the US and Canada.”
